"The Field Programmable Microwave Substrate"

A newly introduced technology, the Field Programmable Microwave Substrate (FPMS), has great potential to meet the requirements of next-generation, ultrahigh data rate, millimeter-wave application needs for the Internet of Things (IoT). FPMS can be transposed to modern wireless devices to instantly reconfigure them according to real-time dynamic operational requirements. Given the unprecedented level of programmability, FPMS could affect microwave/millimeter-wave component design in a similar manner as the FPGA affected digital circuit design. Following an overview of the basic underlying metamaterial operating principle and the initial 1-3 GHz demonstrator, several research directions will be presented to illustrate possible further enhancements:  first, optimization of the unit cell (basic FPMS building block) to permit universal component design using an analytical model; second, extension of the concept to higher frequencies using Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) implementations; and third, development of novel completely definable/ programmable antennas and circuits for millimeter-wave communications.  This project is intended to be conducted in partnership with Carleton University, IETR and XLIM via a joint ANR-NSERC strategic research grant.

Biography
Langis Roy received the B.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, and the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada. He has been a faculty member at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and at Carleton University’s Department of Electronics. From 2005 to 2006, he was a Visiting Professor with the VTT Micromodules Research Center, Oulu, Finland, and an Invited Professor with the INSA Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Toulouse, France. From 2009 to 2010, he was an Invited Researcher with IETR/Université de Rennes1/INSA, Rennes, France. He has co-authored over 100 scientific papers and he holds three patents on system-on-package designs. His current research interests include microwave electronics, high performance electronic circuit packaging, integrated active antennas, reconfigurable microwave components, wireless sensors and aerospace/automotive applications, now extending to THz biosensing and wireless power harvesting. Dr. Roy has been the Chair of the Department of Electronics, Carleton University, from 2003 to 2010. He has held the positions of 2010 chair of CHECE (Canadian Heads of Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments) and board member of ECEDHA (U.S. ECE Department Heads Association), as well as 2017-2018 board member of CAGS (Canadian Association for Graduate Studies). He has served on the panels of several Canadian research granting organizations (NSERC, FQRNT) and program committees of IEEE sponsored conferences (ANTEM, ACES). He is currently a Professor of electrical engineering and Dean of Graduate Studies with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, ON.  He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
