Non-scientific disciplines

Modern languages

Nowadays, one of the most essential tools an engineer must possess is the ability to converse fluently in foreign languages. INSA-Rennes offers courses in 6 foreign languages, two of which are compulsory for every student. For non-French speaking students, French as a Foreign Language is their first foreign language.

  • First foreign language (LV1)
Chosen from: English or German. Also, French as a Foreign Language (FLE)  for foreign students in the international section.
  • Second foreign language (LV2)
Chosen from: English (compulsory for German LV1 and foreign students in the international section), German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese or Japanese.
  • Third foreign language (LV3) for students in the international section
Chosen from: German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese or Chinese.

English is obligatory and  a TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) score of 785 or more is  necessary to validate the INSA Engineering Diploma.
Students choosing German and wishing to acquire a recognised linguistic qualification have the possibility of taking the ZMP - Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung.

P.P.I. – Personalised Professional Project

PPI is a training activity intended for all engineering students in their 1st and 2nd years. It aims at:

  • Guiding students in choosing the speciality best suited to their professional career.
  • Improving students' knowledge of the corporate world and the different branches of engineering.

Communication

Once qualified, engineers will be expected to manage teams, write reports and express themselves at meetings. They must, therefore, be equipped with suitable tools and methods to do so. At INSA-Rennes,  communication studies are undertaken  from 1st to 4th year with the overall objective of:

  • Consolidating and enhancing the trainee engineers' general knowledge, openmindedness and faculty to analyse and constructively criticise.
  • The trainee engineer is instructed in progressive and reasoned control of a broad range of communication practices: written and oral, one-to-one or in groups.

Business management and economics

Naturally, the professional environment of managerial staff is multidimensional and presupposes competence  other than scientific and technological. A qualified engineer will need to integrate economic and social data in the running of projects. It is thus essential to raise trainee engineers' awareness of the legal, social and economic environment awaiting them.

The course is based on three fundamental threads: Accountancy and financial management, law and management strategy concepts, marketing. Both theoretical and practical, this course makes use of management simulation games, project management software, fieldwork projects, presentations by professionals and inter-school partnerships.

During their 5th year of studies, students can obtain the Business Management in Engineering certificate, which INSA-Rennes awards in partnership with the Rennes School of Commerce.

EPS - Sports and physical education

From the 1st to the 4th year, students benefit from two hours of sports education per week. Four sports are chosen from a menu of 24:

  • Team sports: volleyball, handball, basketball, rugby, football, hockey, ice hockey, American football, gaelic football, baseball, ultimate, kayak canoeing, kayak polo, rowing.
  • Individual sports: climbing, badminton, swimming, judo, orienteering, table tennis, golf, white-water kayak canoeing, bodybuilding, cross-country cycling.

Three optional modules are offered in addition to the compulsory module:

  • Practicing Sports
  • Sports Training
  • Sports Management” (for high-level sports students)
