IETR – INSA : Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications-Rennes

UMR CNRS 6164

With more than 250 staff in research laboratories at INSA-Rennes, the University of Rennes 1 and Supélec Rennes, IETR offers a high level of expertise to the industrial and scientific communities.
In complement to its scientific capabilities, IETR has the following technical facilities at its disposal: several anechoic chambers (SER, millimetre-band, near-field), a reverberant chamber, an experimental station for radar systems, a clean room for applications in microelectronics, etc.

Research topics

  • Antennas and Microwaves
Millimetre wave circuits, microwave circuits and antennas, electromagnetic modelling, new array structures, processing of antennas, electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Control Systems and Communication
Digital and high-frequency electronics, signal measurement and processing systems, connectionism (neural networks), control of hybrid dynamic systems.
  • Radar Communications and Propagation
Radioelectric propagation for all types of channel, study of new-generation communications and tracking systems, diffraction and radar systems.
  • Image and Remote Sensing
Image representation, compression and analysis, prototyping on parallel and mixed architectures, analysis and characterisation in remote sensing, bistatic and low-frequency radar polarimetry.
  • Micro-electronics
Development and characterisation of polycrystalline silicon transistors, development of processes for silicon microtechnology, involvement in advanced integrated technologies, microtechnology for sensors.

Fields of excellence of the INSA section of IETR

  • Electromagnetic and modelling optimisation
  • Multi-band antennas
  • Reflector arrays, active networks, integrated broadband devices/arrays
  • Signal integrity and electromagnetic compatibility
  • Near-field techniques
  • Broadband communication techniques and systems (OFDM, CDMA, MIMO, UWB)
  • Modelling and characterisation of propagation channels, diffraction
  • Rapid prototyping, software radio
  • Image representation, compression, analysis and interpretation

Technology transfer

Adventen, Alcatel Space, CNES, DGA, DA-Light Com, France Telecom R&D, Groupe Thalès, Mitsubishi ITE, Nortel Networks, Peugeot-Citroën, Radiall, Satimo, Thomson, Siradel, Lithos, Matra, La Croix, etc.

Facilities

The IETR-INSA teams are supported by three test services (RCS, near-field and reverberant chamber) as well as platforms for characterisation (network and spectrum analysers, wafer probe-station, channel analysers, etc) and prototyping of reconfigurable systems (SoC, FPGA, etc) :

  • Anechoic chambers (Photo 1) equipped with a positioning system, measurement setup and PC control. Measurement of radar transfer function and UWB antennas by polarimetric RCSs , application of radar imagery techniques.
  • Near-field test site (Photo 2) using the modulated scatterer technique, operating in 0.8-77 GHz frequency band. Measurements on passive and active antennas, quantification of the radiation due to the operating environment.
