GMA - Mechanical and Control Systems Engineering

The GMA engineer

GMA engineers are high-level, multi-disciplinary engineers qualified in two complementary fields : mechanics and control systems. Their interdisciplinary skills enable them to address technical and scientific problems related to the study, development, calculation and design of automated mechanical units, as well as the manufacture and production thereof. GMA engineers wishing to attain project leader status may choose to avail of career-development opportunities in “Mechatronics engineering”.

Four broad topics

  • Mechanics
General mechanics. Continuum mechanics. Strength of materials. Fluid mechanics. Finite elements method.
  • Materials
Metallurgy. Heat treatment. Composite materials. Ceramic materials. Plastic materials.
  • Mechanical design and manufacturing
Construction technology and CAD/CAM. Industrial hydraulics and pneumatics. Rapid prototyping. High-speed chemical machining. Theory of machines and mechanisms.
  • Control systems
Electronics, control systems. Controllers and networks. Robotics. Computer-integrated manufacturing. Computing and computer architecture.

Two diplomas

An agreement between the GMA Department and the University of Santa Catarina (Brazil), allows students to obtain two diplomas without prolonging their studies:

  • INSA - GMA Engineering Diploma
  • Engenheiro pela UFSC Diploma

Employment

The multi-disciplinary scientific courses prepare GMA Engineers for a vast choice of careers. Many are attracted to the aerospace and automobile industries, while others become involved in fields as varied as the production of consumer goods or military defence equipment.
