The Civil and urban planning engineer

Civil engineers specialise in the design and implementation of the resources necessary for the construction industry. They assume responsibility for their company and the community their works are intended for. They manage projects involving :

  • The construction of buildings for dwelling, commerce, industrial activities, offices or entertainment
  • The construction of infrastructures for communication and regional planning (roads, bridges, tunnels, logistics centres, dams, power stations) or for safeguarding the environment (water management, waste storage).

Five broad topics

  • Introduction to fundamental and human sciences 
    Architecture, statistics, mechanics of continuous media, fluid mechanics, thermal transfer, geology
  • Knowledge of science and technology
    Hydraulics, resistance of materials, materials science, aggregates, concretes, soil mechanics, topography, building acoustics 
  • Knowledge of engineering disciplines
    Timber structures, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel construction, calculation for supports, foundations, heating-ventilation, illumination engineering
  • Management of space and the environment
    Land-use planning, regional planning and development, impact studies
  • Business management, labour and construction law

Employment

Their multi-disciplinary and generalist education enables Civil Engineers to supervise operations in works contracting and project management, on behalf of departments of engineering and design (dimensioning of works), companies (implementation of works), as well as works inspection offices (verification and diagnostic) and consultancies (safety of persons and goods).
