Course Admissions

Admissions at all stages of the course

Applications for admission from both French and foreign candidates are subject to scrutiny by a selection panel. The candidate's application is assessed under the following headings: school marks,  baccalaureate results, teacher assessments and INSA interview. Successful candidates are chosen on a competitive basis and allocation to one of the five INSAs (Rennes, Rouen, Strasbourg, Lyon or Toulouse) depends on classification and the places available at each establishment. The successful candidate's preferences may also be taken into account.

Other possibilities exist for students to join INSA at different stages of the degree course; the admission procedures are identical throughout the INSA network.

1st year intake

Recruitment procedures are common to all five INSAs.
The processing of applications takes place at the beginning of April for foreign students.

  • Conventional route
Accessible to holders of a baccalaureate or equivalent in a science option.
  • International section
Accessible to all foreign students who have obtained a science option baccalaureate in a French college, a diploma in science studies upon completion of A-levels or equivalent, or a certificate of admission to a science-based university. Selection takes account of the marks obtained by the candidate in mathematics, physics, chemistry and French. A good level of written and spoken French is necessary to follow the courses correctly.

2nd year intake

Recruitment is restricted to Rennes, Toulouse and Strasbourg and is open to students who have completed their first year of studies after the baccalaureate or equivalent.
Admission to INSA is subject to an examination on a case-by-case basis and each student's accredited level in French language studies is scrutinised.
Processing of applications takes place at the beginning of April for foreign students.

3rd year intake

Recruitment procedure is common to all five INSAs and is open to students who have completed two years of study after the baccalaureate, or equivalent.
Processing of applications takes place at the beginning of April for foreign students.

4th year intake

Recruitment at INSA Rennes only.
